Critics' Choice Awards: Everything You Need To Know About The Nominated Songs

The 29th Critics’ Choice Awards are taking place tonight, January 14, 2024, at the Barker Hangar at the Santa Monica Airport in Santa Monica, California. The ceremony will be hosted for the second consecutive year by actress and television host Chelsea Handler and will air on The CW. The Critics’ Choice Awards honor the films and TV programs of the past year, as well as the songs featured on soundtracks, delivering more than 40 prizes. This year’s nominations are led by “Barbie,” which scored 18 nods, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress. On the television side, “The Morning Show” is the most-nominated series (6). The Best Song category is also dominated by “Barbie,” with three songs nominated.

As previously mentioned, three songs from the “Barbie” soundtrack are battling for the Best Song award: “Dance The Night” by Dua Lipa, “I’m Just Ken” by Ryan Gosling, and “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish. While Dua Lipa is a first-time nominee, Billie Eilish, who took home the Golden Globe for Best Original Song just a week ago, already won in the Best Song category in 2022 with “No Time To Die.” Winning this year would make her the first artist with multiple wins in the category in the 2020s. On the other hand, Canadian actor Ryan Gosling has received several Critics’ Choice nominations in the past, including six for Best Actor, but failed to win any of them. However, it’s the first time he is a nominee for Best Song.

The other songs challenging for the Best Song Award are “Peaches” from “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “Road to Freedom” from “Rustin,” and “This Wish” from “Wish.”

Beyond his illustrious career as an actor, Jack Black boasts multiple ventures in the music industry. The latest was “Peaches” for “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” in which he gave his voice to Bowser. Produced by John Spiker, the song had a good performance on music charts, peaking at No. 28 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 56 on the Hot 100, and earned him his first Critics’ Choice nomination since 2013.

Lenny Kravitz is a familiar name at the Critics’ Choice Awards, having been a nominee in 2009 and 2013, but it’s the first time he is a runner-up in the Best Song category. In fact, the song “Road to Freedom,” written and performed by himself, is nominated for Best Song.

Closing out the Best Song nomination list is Ariana DeBose‘s “This Wish” from the animated musical fantasy film “Wish.” The song is written by Julia Michaels.
