Cardi B is finally opening up about one of the biggest questions from her fans: why her smash hit “WAP” was never submitted for GRAMMY consideration. Recently, the Bronx-born rapper revealed she intentionally left the song out of the awards race—despite its massive commercial success—because she feared backlash.
“I was listening to the haters,” Cardi admitted. “I was thinking, ‘Imagine I win [with] “WAP” and people are going to drag me and sh*t.’” The track, featuring Megan Thee Stallion, topped the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of the most viral songs of 2020, breaking streaming records and sparking cultural conversations worldwide. Still, Cardi chose to hold it back from Grammy voters, a decision she now says she regrets.

Fast forward to 2025, and Cardi is taking a different approach. Her sophomore album, Am I The Drama?, out September 19, will officially include “WAP” and “Up”—another No. 1 hit. Some fans have questioned why older tracks are being added to the new project, but Cardi stands firm in her reasoning. “These motherf**kers are just gonna have to be mad,” she said. “My hit records need a home.” The rapper explained that fans have long asked for “WAP” and “Up” to be included on an official album. “Sometimes, people go through Invasion of Privacy to look for ‘WAP’ and ‘Up’. My fans been telling me, ‘Hey, please put [them] on the album.’ I’m gonna do this for my fans. My fans deserve for me to listen to them.”
Now, her long-awaited sophomore album, Am I The Drama?, finally has a release date in September. The album includes 23 tracks and is already making history—Cardi is now the first female rapper to have two albums with multiple Billboard No. 1 singles, even before the new project drops. It’s a full-circle moment for an artist who’s learned to tune out the noise and stay true to her voice.
