Tate McRae is opening up about the pop culture moments that shaped her as an artist. In a recent interview with PAPER Magazine, the 21-year-old singer and dancer revealed that two iconic music videos played a major role in her creative development: Ariana Grande’s a cappella performance of “Dangerous Woman” and Selena Gomez’s “Hands to Myself” video.
“When I saw the a cappella version of Dangerous Woman on YouTube, that was formative for me. Or even when I saw Hands to Myself by Selena Gomez,” Tate said, highlighting how both visuals influenced her early views on performance, style, and confidence in pop music. “There are certain things that stick out in my mind. Maybe it’s just a young teenage girl who sees things for the first time and is like, Wow, I really want to grow up and be like that,” she added.

Tate, who is currently on her Miss Possessive arena tour following the release of her critically acclaimed third album So Close to What, has often credited female pop stars as key influences. In the same interview, she also praised Ariana Grande’s Brighter Days Ahead edition of eternal sunshine, released earlier this year. “I thought it was unbelievable. She nailed it once again. I mean, she’s an alien,” Tate said, impressed by Ariana’s vocal and artistic delivery.
While still being inspired by two pop heavyweights, Tate McRae continues to rise as one of the brightest stars of her generation. She’s winning fans’ hearts with her electrifying performances across Europe on the Miss Possessive Tour. Her third studio album, So Close to What, became a massive success, earning her first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and topping numerous other charts.
