Olivia Rodrigo is no stranger to pop culture moments that feel unreal, but one memory still stands out as truly surreal. During a recent appearance on the Music Makes Us podcast, the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter recounted the time she casually spent an afternoon with Harry Styles. For Rodrigo, the experience felt like watching a childhood fantasy come to life.
“I used to write One Direction fanfic when I was in elementary school,” Rodrigo said. Years later, she found herself having tea with Styles and walking around together. “When I got home, I was like, what the f—? I feel like I wrote a fanfic and lived it,” she admitted. The encounter, she emphasized, was private and low-key, but deeply meaningful. “If I told 10-year-old Olivia, she’d be like, ‘shut the f— up, you’re lying.’”
Olivia also made a point to highlight Styles’ kindness. She described him as “so sweet,” underscoring the genuine warmth of the interaction rather than the celebrity of it.
The story captures a unique generational overlap. Rodrigo, born in 2003, represents a wave of artists who came of age as fans of the very pop stars they now meet as peers. Since breaking out in 2021 with “drivers license,” Rodrigo has become one of the defining voices of her generation. Her debut album Sour and its chart-topping singles established her as pop powerhouse. She followed it with Guts in 2023, a sharper, more confident record, which fueled a world tour that grossed more than $184 million. Looking ahead, the 22-year-old star continues working on her highly anticipated third album, which is expected to arrive in 2026.
