The Story Behind the Stage Name
Ava Max embarked on her musical journey at a young age. In 2008, at just 13 years old, she released her debut EP under the name Amanda Kay. However, the EP failed to gain traction, and her stage name did not resonate well with audiences. Seeking a change, she dropped ‘Amanda’ and adopted ‘Ava‘. In a recent interview, she revealed her discomfort with her given name and her desire for a fresh start. After numerous setbacks and rejections, Ava’s career took a turn when she met record producer Cirkut and released the song “Anyone but You” on SoundCloud. The track caught the attention of various record labels, ultimately leading her to sign with Atlantic Records in 2022. At the time, she was simply known as Ava, and she sought a surname to complete her stage name. Finally settling on ‘Max‘, the name struck a balance between masculine and feminine qualities, but something was still missing—a detail that would capture fans’ attention at first sight.
The Max Cut Hairstyle
When Ava emerged in 2018, she captivated attention not only for her talent but also for her distinctive blonde hairstyle, known as the Max Cut, which drew comparisons to Lady Gaga. Ava debuted this particular haircut in 2016, two years before gaining widespread recognition. The Max Cut, conceived by Ava herself, features an asymmetric length with longer hair on the left side and shorter on the right. In interviews, Ava explained that she did not feel authentic with a conventional hairstyle, stating, ‘It was funny because I was actually experimenting with different haircuts and colors—pink hair, blue hair, all that kind of stuff. Nothing felt like me.’ Furthermore, the Max Cut symbolized ‘the freedom to do your own thing’ and served as a visual representation of her self-expression. The iconic Max Cut accompanied Ava during the ‘Heaven & Hell’ era before she transitioned to a new look for the ‘Diamonds & Dancefloors’ era.
