Charli XCX is setting the record straight about one of her most-discussed quotes of 2026. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the pop star clarified that her viral “dancefloor is dead” remark was never intended as a criticism of dance music itself, but rather a reflection on her own creative direction following the overwhelming success of BRAT.

Speaking to the publication, Charli explained that the comment was specifically tied to her personal artistic evolution rather than the state of the genre. “My husband runs a dance-music label,” she said. “There’s been such a wealth of incredible dance/electronic-adjacent records that have been coming out recently, whether it’s Slayyyter or Underscores or PinkPantheress. Dance music is in an incredible place.”

The clarification arrives months after Charli sparked headlines during an interview with British Vogue in April, where she discussed the direction of her next project. At the time, she bluntly declared, “I think the dance floor is dead, so now we’re making rock music,” a quote that quickly spread across social media.

Many interpreted the statement as a broader assessment of contemporary dance music. Others viewed it as a reaction to the cultural saturation of BRAT, the Grammy-winning album that transformed Charli into one of pop’s most influential artists and helped define music discourse throughout 2024 and 2025.

The conversation gained another layer in May when Madonna appeared to weigh in. Posting a series of photos to Instagram, the Queen of Pop wrote, “If your Dance floor feels dead / Maybe you’re playing the wrong music.” The message immediately fueled speculation that Madonna was responding directly to Charli’s comments, although neither artist publicly addressed the connection.

Meanwhile, Charli is preparing to release her next studio album, Music, Fashion, Film, on July 24. The project has been previewed by the singles “Rock Music” and “SS26.”

The album will also launch alongside the newly announced Music, Fashion, Film Tour across North America.
