Chlöe Bailey is opening up about the disconnect between chart numbers and real-life fan support. During a new appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, released on her 28th birthday, the singer revealed she almost avoided performing songs from her debut solo album, In Pieces, after the intense conversation surrounding its first-week sales.
Looking back on the 2023 release, Chlöe admitted that the online reaction affected her confidence at first. Discussions surrounding the album’s commercial performance made her question whether audiences actually connected with the project.
“No one goes on tour to tour an album nobody knows,” she explained. “So, as I’m on tour, as I’m in press interviews, they’re like, ‘Oh, how do you feel about the low selling numbers?’ Then the first night, everyone knows the songs word for word. And I’m like, ‘Hold on. Meet-and-greets and the whole tour were sold out.’ So I’m like, confused. I see this online. And I see this in real life, what’s happening?”
That experience ultimately changed how she viewed In Pieces. Instead of letting chart discourse define the album, Chlöe said the response from concert audiences proved the music had found its audience, even if that wasn’t immediately reflected in first-week headlines.
Released on March 31, 2023, through Parkwood Entertainment and Columbia Records, In Pieces marked Chlöe’s official debut as a solo artist following years as one half of Chloe x Halle. The album featured singles including “Pray It Away,” “How Does It Feel” with Chris Brown, “Body Do,” the title track, and “Cheatback” featuring Future. Before its release, she also made the unusual decision to scrap earlier singles such as “Have Mercy,” “Treat Me,” “Surprise,” and “For the Night,” explaining that the project had evolved into a different artistic direction.
She followed the album with Trouble in Paradise in August 2024, which struggled commercially despite being supported by the singles “FYS” and “Boy Bye.” After stepping away from a traditional album rollout for nearly two years, Chlöe recently returned with Resurrection, a collaborative mixtape produced entirely by Timbaland.
