Doja Cat has addressed the mixed reactions to her performance of “Diamonds Are Forever” at the 97th Academy Awards, where she was part of a special tribute to the James Bond film series. The tribute, introduced by Halle Berry, also featured BLACKPINK’s Lisa performing “Live and Let Die” and RAYE singing “Skyfall.” The Grammy-winning rapper and singer took on Shirley Bassey’s 1971 Bond theme song in a dramatic and sultry performance. Dressed in a crystal-embellished gown, she brought her unique style to the stage, reinterpreting the classic song with a modern edge. However, her performance received mixed reviews, with some praising her for stepping outside her comfort zone and others critiquing her vocal delivery.

Doja Cat has now responded to the criticism, acknowledging the challenges she faced during the live performance. “I never get to sing like that, and what I did was brave and scary as fk for me,” she said. “I know a lot of people didn’t like it, but a lot of people did, and I feel good that I pushed myself. The song is a classic, and I put a lot of work into it, but the nerves got to me, and a bch hit some flats.” Her James Bond tribute performance was part of a larger segment honoring longtime Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. The tribute also featured an elegant dance sequence by actress Margaret Qualley.
Doja Cat’s response echoes a sentiment shared by fellow performer RAYE, who also addressed criticism of her rendition of “Skyfall,” saying: “It was a bittersweet thing for me,” RAYE said. “I read one bad comment, and someone was like, ‘That was horrible, who let her do that?’ and I’m like, ‘Oh my god, I want to cry.’” RAYE admitted she was deeply affected by negative comments but remained proud of her performance alongside Doja Cat, Lisa, and Qualley.
