Playboi Carti’s highly anticipated album I Am Music has finally arrived, and fans are diving deep into its production and influences. In perfect fashion with his experimental approach, Carti has incorporated a diverse range of samples into the project, pulling from classic R&B, underground rap, and even pop legends.

From Ashanti to Madonna to Young Thug, I Am Music showcases Carti’s ability to bring back to life old songs with his futuristic sound. Some of the most notable samples include Ashanti’s “Only U,” which appears in “Cocaine Nose,” and Madonna’s “Popular,” which is referenced in “Evil Jordan.” Young Thug, who is featured on the album, is also sampled, with his tracks “Hercules” and “Halftime” being sampled in “Radar” and “Jumpin,” respectively.
Carti also taps into Atlanta’s rich rap history, sampling Jeezy’s “Bottom of the Map” in “Radar” and Bankroll Fresh’s “Sydney in Walk.” Additionally, underground classics like SpaceGhostPurrp’s “Fuck Taylor Gang” and Rich Kidz’s “Bend Over” are repurposed in “Crank” and “Like Weezy.” The album even includes a throwback to doo-wop with “Lay My Head on Your Shoulder” by Bill Robinson and the Quails appearing in “Munyun.”
