Lady Gaga used her global stage to address current events in the United States during an emotional moment on her Mayhem Ball tour. On January 29, the pop icon paused her performance at the Tokyo Dome to speak directly to the crowd about immigration enforcement and its human impact. The statement came during the final nights of her six-date run across Osaka and Tokyo, one day before wrapping the Asian leg of the tour.
“I wanna take a second to talk about something that it’s extremely important to me,” Gaga began. “Something important to people all over the world, and especially in America right now.” The 39-year-old singer explained that she would soon be returning home and said her thoughts were consumed by the situation unfolding in the U.S. “In a couple of days I’m gonna be heading home and my heart is aching thinking about the people, the children, the families all over America who are being merciless targeted by ICE,” she said. “I’m thinking about all of their pain and how their lives are being destroyed right in front of us.”
Gaga went on to reference widespread fear within communities. “I’m also thinking about Minnesota, and everyone back at home, who is living in so much fear and searching for answers of what we all should do,” she told the audience. Reflecting on the emotional toll of the situation, she added, “When entire communities lose their sense of safety and belonging, it breaks something in all of us.”
Although the concert took place thousands of miles from the United States, Gaga emphasized solidarity with those affected. “I know we are not in America right now, but we are with our community, and we love you,” she said, asking the crowd to stand with her. She dedicated the next song to those enduring hardship. “I’d like to dedicate this song to everyone who is suffering, to everyone who is feeling alone and helpless, anyone who’s lost their loved one and is having a difficult time — an impossible time — seeing when the end will be near.”
Gaga closed her remarks with a direct appeal for accountability and compassion. “We need to get back to a place of safety and peace and accountability,” she said. “Good people shouldn’t fight so hard and risk their life for well being and respect. And I hope our leaders are listening. I hope you are listening to us, asking you to change the course of action swiftly, and have mercy on everyone in our country.”
Despite the gravity of her message, the singer ended on a note of resilience. “In a time where it doesn’t feel like it’s easy to have hope, it is my community and my friends, my family that hold me up,” she said. “So, I would like to sing a song that does have some hope in it, to try to give us a little bit tonight.”
Lady Gaga will conclude the Asian leg of the Mayhem Ball tour on January 30 before returning to North America. The final stretch launches February 14 in Glendale.
