Selena Gomez has confirmed what fans have speculated for years: “Dorothea,” the fan-favorite track from Taylor Swift, was written about her.

The revelation came during a recent appearance on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast, hosted by Lil Dicky. Reflecting on Gomez’s deep connection to Swift’s catalog, Lil Dicky observed, “It’s very clear that you literally connect with Taylor’s music on a different, like you connect with it.”

Gomez did not hesitate. “A billion percent I feel, well, ‘Dorothea’ is about me, one of her songs,” she said. “And I feel like a lot of moments, huge moments that were self-defining from relationships to family to love to hate, all of it in between. We were figuring it out because I was 15 and she was 18 and we didn’t really know what was going on. And so we’ve never seen each other any differently. So when I listen to it, I hear — I’m so impressed how it’s eloquently put.

“Dorothea” appears on Swift’s 2020 album Evermore, written with producer Aaron Dessner. The song blends Americana and folk textures with honky-tonk piano and subtle percussion. Lyrically, it tells the story of a small-town friend who leaves home to chase Hollywood dreams, only to be remembered with affection and unwavering loyalty.

From the moment of its release, Swift’s audience drew parallels to Gomez. Lines such as “You’re a queen sellin’ dreams, sellin’ makeup and magazines” were widely interpreted as a nod to Gomez’s Rare Beauty brand, launched the same year. Other lyrics referencing pageants and adolescent rebellion echoed Gomez’s early childhood experiences in beauty competitions before her Disney Channel breakthrough.

The Wizard of Oz connection added another layer. Gomez has long cited the film as a favorite, and fans viewed the name “Dorothea” — a variation of Dorothy — as a subtle tribute. The broader theme of enduring friendship despite distance mirrored the public narrative of Swift and Gomez’s bond, which dates back to 2008.

Commercially, “Dorothea” peaked at No. 47 on the Billboard Global 200 and charted internationally. Swift also performed the track during her Eras Tour.
