The Path to So Close to What

Following the release of Think Later, Tate McRae embarked on a world tour in 2024, wrapping up the 65-show run in November. Despite her commitment to live performances, the 21-year-old singer returned to the studio in early 2024—just a month after Think Later dropped. Throughout the year, she frequently shared updates from her recording sessions, revealing that she was feeling highly inspired to write new music. “I’m writing and seeing what first comes to mind right now, especially since it’s so soon after my album just dropped,” she shared. On September 12, Tate officially launched her new era with “It’s Ok I’m Ok,” the lead single from So Close to What. Two months later, she followed up with the second single, “2 Hands,” while also announcing the album. The final single, “Sports Car,” arrived on January 24, earning widespread acclaim for its fresh sound and creative music video.
