Lil Wayne is looking back on one of the most important decisions of his career, revealing how quickly he recognized the star potential in Drake and Nicki Minaj before signing them to Young Money Entertainment. Speaking on Friends Keep Secrets, the rap icon reflected on hearing Drake for the first time and explained why the Toronto rapper immediately stood out.
“When I heard [Drake], it was all rap,” Wayne recalled. “Then, one of those hooks came in and I was like, ‘Who’s on the hook?’ And they was like, ‘That’s him.’ And I was like, ‘That’s the guy? That’s him singing? Why he ain’t do more of this?’”
Wayne said the realization came instantly. “It was instant. Like, come on, man,” he added, describing the moment he knew Drake possessed something different from everyone else.
The story dates back to late 2008, when Wayne was introduced to Drake through Jas Prince in Houston. At the time, Drake had begun generating buzz with early mixtapes, including So Far Gone. While many focused on his lyricism, Wayne immediately recognized the value of combining sharp rap verses with melodic hooks, a formula that would later define much of Drake’s career.
Nicki Minaj followed a similar path into the Young Money camp. After hearing her mixtapes, Wayne signed the Queens rapper alongside Drake, creating what would become one of the most influential rosters in modern hip-hop. Both artists officially joined Young Money around 2009 before launching careers that reshaped rap and pop music over the following decade.
Wayne’s belief in Drake and Nicki proved to be one of the defining moves of his legacy. Drake’s debut album, Thank Me Later, arrived in 2010 and launched a run that has since produced multiple Billboard Hot 100 records and countless chart-topping albums. Nicki quickly became one of rap’s most successful female artists with Pink Friday.
