Six years ago today, Taylor Swift released ‘Look What You Made Do’ as the lead single from her sixth studio album ‘Reputation.’ The song marked Taylor’s comeback after a year of hiatus and, as only great artist as Taylor Swift can do, ‘Look What You Made Do’ stunned fans and was considered as one of the most memorable comebacks.

The song broke the record for most streams in a single day on Spotify at the time, sold over 350,000 units in the US in its first week, and topped the Billboard Hot 100 for three consecutive weeks. The music video garnered 43.2 million views in its first 24 hours, breaking the record for the most views in its first 24 hours of release, at that time.

Lyrics

I don’t like your little games

Don’t like your tilted stage

The role you made me play of the fool

No, I don’t like you

I don’t like your perfect crime

How you laugh when you lie

You said the gun was mine

Isn’t cool, no, I don’t like you (oh!)

But I got smarter, I got harder in the nick of time

Honey, I rose up from the dead, I do it all the time

I got a list of names, and yours is in red, underlined

I check it once, then I check it twice, oh!

Ooh, look what you made me do

Look what you made me do

Look what you just made me do

Look what you just made me…

Ooh, look what you made me do

Look what you made me do

Look what you just made me do

Look what you just made me do

I (I) don’t (don’t) like your kingdom keys (keys)

They (they) once belonged to me (me)

You (you) asked me for a place to sleep

Locked me out and threw a feast (what?)

The world moves on, another day another drama, drama

But not for me, not for me, all I think about is karma

And then the world moves on, but one thing’s for sure

Maybe I got mine, but you’ll all get yours

But I got smarter, I got harder in the nick of time (nick of time)

Honey, I rose up from the dead, I do it all the time (I do it all the time)

I got a list of names, and yours is in red, underlined

I check it once, then I check it twice, oh.

Ooh, look what you made me do

Look what you made me do

Look what you just made me do

Look what you just made me…

Ooh, look what you made me do

Look what you made me do

Look what you just made me do

Look what you just made me do

I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me

I’ll be the actress starring in your bad dreams

I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me

I’ll be the actress starring in your bad dreams

I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me

I’ll be the actress starring in your bad dreams don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me

I’lI be the actress starring in your bad dreams

(Ooh, look what you made me do)

(Look what you made me do)

(Look what you just made me do)

I’m sorry

But the old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now

Why? Oh, ’cause she’s dead (oh)

Ooh, look what you made me do

Look what you made me do

Look what you just made me do

Look what you just made me…

Ooh, look what you made me do

Look what you made me do

Look what you just made me do

Ooh, look what you made me do

Look what you made me do

Look what you just made me do

Look what you just made me…

Ooh, look what you made me do

Look what you made me do

Look what you just made me do

Look what you just made me do

Meaning

The song is often interpreted as a response to the various controversies and public feuds that Taylor Swift had experienced leading up to the release of the album. The Popstar revealed that ‘It actually started with just a poem that I wrote about my feelings.’

The lyrics of the song convey a sense of empowerment and defiance, with Taylor Swift expressing that she’s no longer willing to be manipulated or controlled by others. The recurring line “Look What You Made Me Do” serves as a declaration of her decision to seize control over her own narrative and identity. This choice symbolizes her determination to liberate herself from the influence of others.

The music video for “Look What You Made Me Do” also plays with Taylor Swift’s public image and her past personas, showcasing a transformation and a symbolic “rebirth” as she addresses various versions of herself.

Taylor’s Version

For the past three years, Taylor Swift has been working on re-recording her albums following the masters controversy with manager Scooter Braun. While ‘1989 (Taylor’s Version)’ is scheduled for release on October 27, Taylor has already released her versions of ‘Fearless,’ ‘Red,’ and ‘Speak Now.’

‘Reputation’ is rumored to be the next album that Taylor Swift will re-record, and fans are eager to know if the rumors are true. Adding to the excitement among Swifties is the teaser trailer for the Amazon Prime Video series ‘Wilderness,’ which indeed features ‘Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version).
