Nearly ten years after his last solo album, Bruno Mars is back in familiar territory — and he sounds comfortable there.
The Romantic, released via Atlantic Records, marks Mars’ fourth solo studio effort and his first since 2016’s 24K Magic. The nine-track project, running just over 30 minutes, does not attempt to reinvent his formula. Pop, Soul/R&B, and funk remain the foundation. Romance remains the thesis.
The title is not subtle. Across the album, Mars writes about love with the kind of directness that has long been his strength. There is no conceptual maze to decode. No abrupt stylistic detours. From the opening notes of “Risk It All” to the groove-driven “Cha Cha Cha,” the record settles into a space he understands instinctively: heartfelt lyrics layered over radio-ready rhythm.
The lead single, “I Just Might,” set the tone weeks ago when it debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Its polished production and restrained vulnerability previewed what the album ultimately delivers — a cohesive, danceable valentine.
If there is a centerpiece, it may be “God Was Showing Off.” The track captures Mars at his most openly affectionate. He describes his love interest as “a miracle to me,” elevating admiration into something near-mythic.
Musically, The Romantic rarely strays from its lane. That restraint will divide listeners. Some may wish for sharper risks or more experimentation. Others will recognize the discipline. Mars is not chasing trends here. He is reinforcing a brand that has proven durable for over a decade.
Below, we rank every song on The Romantic — from the smoothest slow dance to the most infectious groove. See where your favorite lands.
