Doja Cat is ready to open a new chapter. In her latest interview with V Magazine, the Grammy-winning artist describes her upcoming album Vie as “pop-driven,” embracing the genre’s broad appeal while still pushing her creative limits. “I do want to be self-aware enough to admit the fact that this is a pop-driven project,” she said. “I know that I can make pop music, and pop is just that—it’s popular.”

Her statement comes as Vie builds buzz among fans eager for a new sound. Inspired by the retro vibes of the 1970s and 1980s, the album is expected to explore vintage aesthetics with a bold and modern twist. “It’s not perfect in the sense of anything,” Doja said in an earlier interview. “It’s all the different feelings I have when it comes to that era.”

But this time around, Doja Cat is making it clear that she’s not chasing chart numbers. Instead, she’s focused on the craft itself. “What I want to avoid is that little monster that just wants success,” she told V Magazine. “It’s how things sound that makes the music worth listening to. I would not be an artist if I didn’t care, right?” She also emphasized her commitment to growth over perfection, even if the commercial response doesn’t match previous records. “If for any reason a project of mine does a little less good than the last one, I don’t want to be up in arms and upset about it. I want to embrace that.

While Vie has no official release date yet, momentum is building. Doja Cat’s latest album, Scarlet, was released in September 2023. The LP featured the chart-topping single “Paint the Town Red” and other standout tracks such as “Agora Hills” and “Demons.” Scarlet saw moderate success on global charts, peaking at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and No. 5 on the UK Albums Chart.
