InMusic x Artists: Goodbye Butterfly Interview

Hailing from Naarm/Melbourne, Australia, Goodbye Butterfly has emerged as a captivating presence in the realm of indie rock/pop. Comprising a quartet, the girl-group consists of members Alice, Immy, Matilda, and Eve. The group secured a good success with their debut single ‘Golden,’ released in 2022. Over the past year, their focus centered on live performances and sound refinement. Now, after a year and a half of anticipation, Goodbye Butterfly unveils their new single, ‘Where Will You Be Tomorrow?’

What inspired you to form a band and pursue a career in music together?

The band came together after Alice (singer/guitarist) met Immy (drummer) at a music camp. We instantly became friends, bonding over bands and artists we both love as well as gigs we’ve both been to. We jammed together and everything felt right! Immy had two friends who were also musicians, Matilda (guitar) and Eve (bass) and they joined! The band was complete!

How do you approach the songwriting process as a band, and what themes or messages do you aim to convey through your music?

Alice writes the songs and then brings them to the band. Then, we jam them together playing with arrangement, tone etc.

Lyrically, we explore themes of youth and the experience of being young. This includes young love and friendships. This is tied in with an ongoing reference to nature in our music. ‘Golden’ and ‘Where Will You Be Tomorrow?’ are both songs about summer time. ‘Golden’ is describing a summer love while ‘Where Will You Be Tomorrow?’ revisits a road trip.

Can you tell us about your new single “Where Will You Be Tomorrow”?

I (Alice) wrote ‘Where Will You Be Tomorrow?’ at the start of 2022 in a Motel room on the last day of a road trip up the NSW coast. I was reminiscing on the lovely times I had just had over the past 2 months, experiencing the beauty of pristine beaches, waterfalls and more with a close group of beautiful friends.

Whilst the track was written as a celebration of an adventure, at the same time, those feeling were tainted with a sense of pity, knowing that the next day my life was returning to ‘normal’ and this time in my life was coming to an end. The chorus captures this the most. I hope that tomorrow, when I am home, I will be able to connect with the carefree girl in the photographs and videos.

Musically, I wanted to capture the beauty of the NSW coast. The shimmering rhythm guitar and swooning strings are representative of light glistening on the water. The flowing guitar line and dreamy vocal line reflects our carefree mindsets on the trip.

The track was recorded in June at a studio based in Northcote, Melbourne. We celebrated the release at a single launch gig on Friday August 4th at the Evelyn Hotel. Harriet Wraith and Alli Avenue supported us.

This is your second single, what are the differences (if any) with your first single “Golden”?

‘Golden’ was recorded at the beginning of our band ‘career’. Our bassist Eve wasn’t even in the band yet! Since then, we have had over a year of performing live and working on our craft, refining our skills as a band and musically connecting with one another.

With this new track we are coming into and discovering our sound a lot more. “Where Will You Be Tomorrow?” explores new rhythm guitar tones that we didn’t use in “Golden”. We use both acoustic and electric guitar in this new piece.

The themes of both songs are similar, both exploring ideas of youth and the experience of being young. Summer loves and times with friends.

What is a message you would like to give through your music and why?

This is a tough one! With “Where Would You Be Tomorrow?” we would like to encourage people to be present in the moment. Enjoy and savour moments and opportunities you get because one day it will just be a photo!
