Madison Beer is weighing in on fan discussions surrounding Olivia Rodrigo’s new song “honeybee” and its perceived similarities to her 2021 hit “Reckless.” During a recent Q&A session in Phoenix, the singer addressed the comparisons directly, making it clear that she is not rushing to any conclusions based on short clips circulating online.
Speaking to fans, Beer explained that she has only heard a brief portion of Rodrigo’s track and wants more context before offering a definitive opinion.
“I don’t want to say that because I’m like, I only heard a 15-second snippet. Like I want to hear the whole song, you know?” Beer said.
The conversation emerged after some listeners on social media pointed out similarities between the opening moments of “honeybee,” a standout track from Rodrigo’s newly released album You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, and the piano-driven atmosphere of “Reckless.” While Beer acknowledged that certain musical elements may overlap, she emphasized that the progression itself is far from unique.
“I feel like the chords maybe are similar. But honestly, that chord progression has been used a billion times,” she explained. “Like even when ‘Reckless’ came out, people were like, ‘This sounds like this, this sounds like that.’ I’m like guys, it’s a very common chord progression, like truth be told. But the reason it’s used a lot is because it’s really good.”
The singer also unexpectedly referenced another Rodrigo song while discussing the topic. “I forgot about ‘vampire’. Love ‘vampire’,” she added.
Beer’s response arrives during a busy period for both artists. She is currently on the North American leg of her Locket Tour, her first arena-scale headline run, supporting her third studio album Locket. The tour began in Europe on May 11 and is scheduled to conclude on July 13 in New York City.
Rodrigo, meanwhile, is enjoying the biggest commercial moment of her career. Released on June 12, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 485,000 equivalent album units, the largest opening week of 2026 for any solo artist. Every song from the album entered the Billboard Hot 100, while tracks including “Stupid Song,” “Drop Dead,” “The Cure,” and “honeybee” have driven massive streaming numbers.
