Nearly two decades after first teasing a full-length collaboration, Nas and DJ Premier are finally ready to deliver Light Years. The joint album, set for release on December 12, 2025, through Mass Appeal, marks one of the most anticipated hip-hop projects of the century. It also serves as the culminating installment of Mass Appeal’s Legend Has It… series, a yearlong rollout spotlighting seminal artists including Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Big L, Slick Rick, Mobb Deep, and De La Soul.

The partnership between Nas and DJ Premier is rooted in the foundation of modern hip-hop. Their work together on Illmatic remains among the most influential artist–producer collaborations in rap history, with Premier crafting timeless tracks such as “N.Y. State of Mind,” “Represent,” and “The World Is Yours.” Their chemistry has long fueled fan demand for a complete body of work, but scheduling conflicts and separate artistic directions kept the project in limbo for years.
The first major sign of revival arrived in April 2024 with the release of “Define My Name,” a single celebrating the 30th anniversary of Illmatic. The track closed with both artists confirming that their long-awaited album was “coming soon,” supported by a press statement from Mass Appeal promising a late-2024 release. Progress stretched into 2025, with the label later revealing that Light Years would anchor a seven-album archival and new-release series.
In an October 2025 interview with Rolling Stone, Nas shared that the album includes “older songs” recorded during the earliest development stages in the mid-2000s. He explained that several ideas conceived as far back as 2006 were finally brought to life in the studio over the past year.
The official release date was confirmed on November 20, when Premier surprised fans during a Bristol concert with The Alchemist. Today, November 25, Mass Appeal revealed the album’s title and cover art, igniting widespread excitement among fans.
