The year may be winding down, but the release calendar is refusing to slow. With Christmas only two weeks away, this Friday’s slate of new music arrives like a final surge of gifts for rap and hip-hop fans. Leading the pack is 21 Savage, who returns with his long-awaited fourth studio album What Happened to the Streets?. Announced only days ago, the project marks Savage’s first full-length LP since American Dream, his Billboard 200-topping 2024 album. The new record arrives with a notable list of collaborators, as Savage unveiled a tracklist filled with major names including Drake, GloRilla, Latto, and Lil Baby.
Rap fans also receive a long-awaited moment of history this week with the arrival of Light Years, the collaborative album from Nas and DJ Premier. Released via Mass Appeal, the project represents nearly two decades of anticipation. Initial sessions between the Queensbridge icon and the legendary producer began in 2006, but scheduling and timing kept the album in limbo—until now. Their partnership sits at the core of modern hip-hop history, with DJ Premier’s contributions to Illmatic helping define the sound of classic New York rap.
