The Path to You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love

The road to You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love began after the release of GUTS in September 2023. That album earned six Grammy nominations and fueled the massive GUTS World Tour.

In early 2026, Rodrigo started hinting at a new creative direction. During interviews, she described the project as being built around “sad love songs,” explaining that some of her favorite romantic music contains elements of longing, uncertainty, and emotional conflict. The album title was officially unveiled on April 2, 2026, after appearing on a pink wall in Los Angeles as part of a city-wide teaser campaign.

While Sour and GUTS leaned heavily into pop-rock and alternative influences, Rodrigo has described this album as her most experimental work to date. London reportedly played a significant role in shaping the record’s creative direction. Dan Nigro once again serves as producer, helping craft a project that blends indie rock, alternative pop, singer-songwriter influences, and emotionally driven storytelling.

It also delivered the biggest Spotify debut of 2026 by a female artist.

Follow-up single “The Cure” arrived on May 22 and quickly became another global hit. The song debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, reached No. 1 in several international markets, and opened atop Spotify’s Daily Global Chart with 7.215 million streams.

Surprise Performances and Collaborations

Rodrigo’s album rollout has included several high-profile live moments. On April 18, she surprised fans by joining Addison Rae during Coachella and performing “Drop Dead” live. A few weeks later, she debuted the emotional ballad “Begged” during her appearance on Saturday Night Live.

Perhaps the biggest pre-release moment came on June 6 at Primavera Sound in Barcelona. During an unannounced set, Rodrigo premiered “What’s Wrong With Me” alongside Robert Smith of The Cure. The performance marked the first official collaboration of her career. Adding to the excitement, a music video for “Stupid Song” is scheduled to arrive alongside the album release.
