RAYE has officially joined the ranks of GRAMMY-honored artists. The British singer-songwriter has been named the recipient of the Recording Academy’s Harry Belafonte Best Song for Social Change Award for her powerful track “Ice Cream Man.”

The honor falls under the GRAMMYs’ Special Merit Awards, specifically categorized as a CEO’s Merit Award. While it is not a competitive category voted on by the full Recording Academy membership, it remains one of the institution’s most respected distinctions. The award recognizes message-driven songwriting that confronts urgent social issues, encourages empathy, and demonstrates music’s ability to inspire meaningful change. RAYE will receive the award during the Recording Academy’s Special Merit Awards Ceremony on January 31, at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles.

Originally established in 2022 as the Best Song for Social Change Special Merit Award, the accolade was renamed in 2024 to honor Harry Belafonte, the late singer, actor, and civil rights activist whose career embodied the union of art and activism. Belafonte, a two-time GRAMMY winner and Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, remains a symbol of music used as a vehicle for justice and awareness. Each year, recipients are selected by a dedicated committee of peers with a focus on songwriting excellence and cultural relevance.

RAYE’s “Ice Cream Man.” stands firmly within that legacy. The song is widely regarded as one of her most unflinching works, confronting themes of sexual assault, power imbalance in the music industry, body image struggles, and long-term trauma. Drawing from deeply personal experiences, RAYE delivers the narrative with stark honesty, allowing vulnerability to become the song’s driving force.
