What’s New This Year?
The Grammys have implemented several important changes. Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical now falls under the Pop & Dance/Electronic field, and Best Pop Dance Recording has been renamed Best Dance Pop Recording. Additionally, Best Dance/Electronic Music Album is now Best Dance/Electronic Album, with a new requirement that over 50% of the content be dance/electronic to qualify. Conjunto music will now compete in the Best Regional Roots Music Album category instead of Best Música Mexicana Album (Including Tejano).
In Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media, eligible recordings must contain over 50% new material from Grammy-eligible programming. The Best Song for Social Change has been renamed in honor of Harry Belafonte and will now be a Special Merit Award selected by a committee of peers.
Additional updates include Winners’ Certificates for featured artists with less than 50% playing time on winning albums, an increased entry fee of $180 for media submissions, and refined criteria for Best Traditional R&B Performance and Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album, the latter now encompassing more entries from the musical theater community. Best Children’s Music Album submissions now require English translations and must specify an intended age range of “infant to 12 years old.” Lastly, the criteria for Songwriter of the Year, Non-Classical have been expanded, with the song submission minimum lowered from five to four, supporting broader songwriter representation.
Eligibility and Contenders for Nomination
To qualify for the 2025 Grammy Awards, music had to be released between September 16, 2023, and August 30, 2024. Tate McRae’s hit “Greedy” narrowly missed the eligibility window, having been released just a day early, on September 15, 2023.
Top Predictions for Nomination
While the Grammy nominations often bring surprises, several albums and artists are considered likely nominees. For Album of the Year, Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department and Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter are expected to be frontrunners. Billie Eilish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft is also predicted to contend in this category, alongside works from Ariana Grande, Charli XCX, Future & Metro Boomin, and Chappell Roan.
In the Best New Artist category, breakout artists like Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, and Benson Boone are strong candidates. Carpenter and Roan are also expected to compete for Song of the Year and Record of the Year, categories where Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish are also seen as likely nominees.
