On August 8th, Shawn Mendes made his highly anticipated return with two new singles, “Why Why Why” and “Isn’t That Enough,” both lead singles from his upcoming fifth album, Shawn. In an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, the Canadian superstar opened up about the inspiration behind these tracks and the journey that shaped them.

During the conversation, Shawn, now 26, reflected on the creative process following the release of his previous album, Wonder. He shared that he initially felt pressured to dive back into making music but wasn’t drawn to any specific theme or topic. It wasn’t until he played “Isn’t That Enough” for his mother that he felt a shift. “I remember playing her ‘Isn’t That Enough,’” Shawn recalled. “The first thing she said was, ‘Oh wow, baby, you found yourself.’ My mom never says things like that, and it gave me chills.”
Shawn went on to explain how a lack of joy in recent years became a driving force behind the new singles. He candidly spoke about his struggles with anxiety and how those experiences shaped the honest and powerful songs that will be featured on Shawn. Writing “Why Why Why,” in particular, was a breakthrough moment for him, allowing him to tap into a new level of self-awareness and truth in his music.
The Mendes Army won’t have to wait long to experience the full album. Scheduled for release on October 18th, Shawn is poised to be his most natural and authentic work to date.
