We’re just days away from the release of Shawn Mendes’ new album, Shawn, set to drop on November 15, 2024. The Canadian sensation, who recently performed at the MTV EMA, spoke with Spotify about the album’s sonic direction. Mendes revealed that Shawn draws inspiration from 1970s classic rock, citing legendary artists like Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, and Crosby, Stills & Nash as sources of influence. He shared that he aimed to channel the soulful, introspective lyricism that defined that era, describing his inspiration as, “Just soulful, heartfelt lyricists and writers.” Mendes said he was drawn to the sincerity and depth these artists brought to their music, a sentiment he sought to capture in his own work.

This classic-rock influence marks a notable shift for Mendes, whose previous albums, including Shawn Mendes and Wonder, leaned toward contemporary pop. Beyond its vintage sound, Shawn is expected to be one of his most introspective projects to date. Mendes shared that creating this album has been a therapeutic process, with his experiences of personal struggles inspiring many of the songs.
In the lead-up to the release, Mendes has shared several singles to give fans a preview of the album. Alongside “Heart of Gold,” released two weeks ago as the fourth single, “Why Why Why,” “Isn’t That Enough,” and “Nobody Knows” have also preceded the album. In total, Shawn will feature 12 tracks, set to be in fans’ hands this Friday.
