Doja Cat’s latest album, ‘Scarlet,’ is predominantly infused with Hip Hop and R&B sounds, marking a departure from her previous critically acclaimed album ‘Planet Her,’ which leaned more towards Pop and became the most streamed album by a female rapper.
Unlike her previous works, ‘Scarlet’ showcases a darker aesthetic, and Doja Cat introduces her alter-ego named Scarlet. This concept is prominently reflected in the visual elements of songs like ‘Paint The Town Red’ and ‘Demons.’ During the creation of ‘Scarlet,’ Doja Cat drew inspiration from occult imagery, including references to Fortunio Liceti’s ‘De Monstris.’ As a result, some fans accused her of being associated with Satanism and the Illuminati. The controversy escalated when the 27-year-old rapper revealed a new tattoo featuring a monster from ‘De Monstris.’
Setting aside the controversies, Doja Cat’s new album has garnered critical acclaim, with The Independent giving it 4 out of 5 stars, and it holds a Metacritic score of 76.
‘Scarlet’ comprises 17 tracks and notably features no guest appearances, giving listeners 51 minutes of uninterrupted Doja Cat’s voice.
