Travis Scott has opened up about the moment Christopher Nolan invited him to join the cast of The Odyssey. During an appearance on The Tonight Show on July 21, the rapper recalled his disbelief after the Oscar-winning filmmaker approached him about acting in the blockbuster epic.
Scott admitted he initially assumed Nolan wanted to discuss music, not a role in one of the year’s biggest films.
“[Christopher Nolan] is like ‘I’m working on this movie… I want you to be in it.’ And I’m like ‘Woah, woah, wait— you know I make music?’” Scott told host Jimmy Fallon.
The conversation offered a behind-the-scenes look at how Scott landed his role in Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey, which premiered on July 17 and debuted at No. 1 at the box office. The rapper portrays a Greek bard who recounts Odysseus’ legendary exploits during the Trojan War, including the famous Trojan Horse strategy, in a dramatic banquet hall sequence featuring Telemachus (Tom Holland) and Menelaus (Jon Bernthal).
Scott’s casting first became public during an AFC Championship television spot in January 2026, surprising fans because Nolan had kept much of the film’s production under wraps. The ensemble includes Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron and several other Hollywood stars.
Nolan later explained that Scott was chosen because the role of the bard reflects the oral storytelling tradition that preserved Homer’s epic for centuries. The director saw a direct parallel between those ancient poets and modern rap artists, making Scott a natural fit for the character.
The appearance also represents the biggest acting opportunity of Scott’s career. Although he previously appeared in Gully (2019) and Harmony Korine’s Aggro Dr1ft (2023), The Odyssey marks his first major role in a studio blockbuster. The collaboration also reunited Scott with Nolan after contributing the song “The Plan” to Tenet in 2020.
Beyond acting, Scott remained involved musically by recording the film’s end-credits song, “When I’m Home,” alongside composer Ludwig Göransson and James Blake.
During the interview, Scott described Nolan as “a real mentor of mine” and admitted he was “nervous as f***” upon arriving on set, especially after discovering he would be sharing scenes with actors including Hathaway, Holland and Pattinson. He added that the cast and director immediately made him feel comfortable, allowing him to embrace an entirely new creative challenge.
