Christopher Nolan has revealed the thinking behind one of the most unexpected casting choices in his upcoming adaptation of The Odyssey. In a new interview with TIME published May 12, the Oscar-winning director explained why he brought Travis Scott into the film’s sprawling mythological world, connecting the rapper directly to the oral tradition that shaped Homer’s epic centuries ago.
“I cast him because I wanted to nod towards the idea that this story has been handed down as oral poetry, which is analogous to rap,” Nolan told the magazine, framing Scott’s role as more than a celebrity cameo. The Houston artist reportedly plays a bard, a figure central to how stories were preserved and shared in ancient Greece long before written manuscripts existed.
That creative decision fits squarely within Nolan’s broader vision for The Odyssey, which arrives in theaters on July 17, 2026. The director has described the film as one of the largest productions of his career, combining practical effects, full IMAX photography, and extensive location shooting across Europe and the Mediterranean. Matt Damon leads the cast as Odysseus, alongside Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Zendaya as Athena, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Benny Safdie.
The collaboration marks a reunion between Nolan and Scott following Tenet. Back in 2020, Scott released “The Plan” as part of the film’s soundtrack rollout, with Nolan praising the artist’s instinct for atmosphere and cinematic scale during the campaign.
