Opening with the brief instrumental “So It Starts…,” the album establishes a cinematic tone that threads through its runtime. From there, Humberstone navigates themes of love, distance, and self-doubt with striking clarity, often framing heartbreak through a lens that feels both intimate and theatrical. Bright synths and rhythmic momentum frequently offset the weight of her words, creating a push-and-pull dynamic that defines the record’s identity.
“Beauty Pageant” anchors the project’s conceptual core. Written as a critique of image and expectation, the track dissects the pressure to perform perfection, culminating in a quiet emotional collapse.
Elsewhere, Humberstone’s songwriting reaches some of its most nuanced territory. On “Peachy,” the album’s tenth track, she strips back the production almost entirely, allowing her voice to carry the emotional weight. Visual influences also shape the album’s atmosphere. Drawing from gothic storytelling and classic cinema—ranging from Brothers Grimm tales to Black Swan—Humberstone builds a cohesive world that mirrors the emotional turbulence of the songs.
