Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” is a defining moment in pop music history, and today marks the 12th anniversary of its release on August 13, 2012. The song quickly became an anthem for anyone who has ever gone through a messy breakup, with its catchy chorus and sassy lyrics resonating with millions of listeners worldwide.

As with many of Taylor Swift’s hits, fans have always been curious about the story behind the song—specifically, who it was written about. While Taylor has never explicitly confirmed the subject, many believe the song was inspired by her on-again, off-again relationship with actor Jake Gyllenhaal. The two, who had a significant age gap, dated briefly in 2010 when Taylor was 22 and Gyllenhaal was 31. Their relationship lasted just three months, reportedly leaving Taylor with plenty of material to fuel her songwriting, leading to “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.”

The song was the lead single from Taylor’s fourth studio album, Red, which marked her transition from country to pop music. The lyrics detail the frustration of dealing with an ex who keeps trying to rekindle the relationship, only to ultimately declare that they are never, ever getting back together. A particularly notable line—“And you would hide away and find your peace of mind / With some indie record that’s much cooler than mine”—reflects how her ex criticized her music, making her feel inadequate. “It was a relationship where I felt very critiqued and subpar. He’d listen to this music that nobody had heard of … but as soon as anyone else liked this band, he’d drop them,” Taylor has said.

To get back at him, she wrote “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” with the hope of commercial success, ensuring he would hear it everywhere. It’s a direct contrast to the music he tried to make her feel inferior to. It peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 one week after debuting at No. 72, logging one of the biggest single-week jumps in history. It earned a Grammy nomination for Record of the Year.
