In her recent interview with InMusic, rising star Felicity Estelle discussed her unique blend of pop and R&B, and how artists like Donald Glover and Tyler, the Creator inspire her artistry. Through her songs, Felicity aims to create human connection. Despite her young career, her single “Pity” amassed over 100,000 streams on Spotify, and her debut music video “Two” garnered over 40,000 views in its first month. While in the first part of the interview she opened up about her life, struggles, and mental health, emphasizing her commitment to authenticity in her music, the second part delved into Felicity’s hit single “Pity,” along with her latest releases “My Dreams” and “Three (teachmeyourart).” Additionally, she provided a glimpse of what is to come.
Can you tell us about your recent single “My Dreams”?
My Dreams is a fun, vibrant, pop/8-bit track. I was super excited to release this song, i had been trying to find a way to make something pop/club vibe without using a jersey club sound and I’d like to say I achieved that with this one- a huge shout out as well to the producer Call Dealer, did an amazing job with this beat.
What is the meaning behind this song?
My Dreams is all about the confusion of being young and in love with the wrong people- Looking for comfort in someone who you know can’t provide it, and having to come to terms with a whirlwind of emotions.
Last year you released what would have become your biggest hit “Pity.” The song has recently achieved the remarkable milestone of reaching 100K streams. How do you personally connect with the idea that the song has reached and resonated with such a vast audience?
Honestly it’s still wild to me. Pity was originally one of those little filler songs that I had written after a small breakup with absolutely no intention of dropping it. We had put it out on select platforms at first just for the heck of it, and then after seeing the numbers it was getting, released it to all platforms and now we’re here! I guess I’m not surprised that people resonate with this one, it’s just very heartwarming that most of the music I make is for others, and one of the few songs I made for myself touched that many people.
Did you ever think that “Pity” would become such a hit?
Never lol, it still feels weird to call it a “hit song”, especially considering my discography, Pity is a little out of my normal genre so I’m humbled to see the reactions it’s gotten.
Ultimately, what is your favorite? “Pity” or “My Dreams”?
My Dreams <3 call me a baby but when I first heard the beat to this song I cried because I was so excited to record on it, and it came out exactly how I had imagined so I’m super proud.
Could you share some details about your new single, “Three (teachmeyourart)”?
I consider “Three” as the big sister to my single “Two”. Although these songs are almost 2 years apart, I was going through very similar life experiences while writing them. I definitely feel that mentally and musically I have grown a lot since the release of “Two”, and I really hope I captured that in this latest release.
In “Three (teachmeyourart),” you continue to experiment with something new, riding the wave of “My Dreams.” Can you tell us about the inspiration behind this experimentation and how it compares to your previous work?
I don’t particularly think I have a specific inspiration when it comes to writing/composing most of the time. Like I’ve said before, it’s all about how you feel, and when I hear a certain sound or beat that just hits the right way, everything comes to me at once. I was dealing with a lot of personal things when I wrote Three, and this beat perfectly captured how I was feeling on the inside. Taking a look at my discography, it’s definitely apparent that I love to use these intricate types of beats that have a lot going on, I feel like they represent me as an artist and as a person.
Finally, in the first part of the interview you hinted at a new single every month. What can we expect for April?
I love the element of surprise so I won’t give too much away- but we’ve definitely been working with a lot of new sounds (of course) for you guys. When it comes to my music, the best thing I can tell you is to expect the unexpected.
