Danish singer-songwriter MAGLY is on a journey of self-discovery and musical evolution, and her latest single “Honesty” is a bold reflection of that. In her exclusive interview with InMusic, MAGLY opened up about her creative process, her upbringing in the Danish countryside, and how life’s challenges have shaped her music.
MAGLY grew up in a small town in Denmark, a place she admits she didn’t appreciate at first. “I used to hate the small town, but now I really adore it and appreciate what I grew up in and around,” she shared.
Her music falls in the pop/singer-songwriter genre, but it’s not just any pop music—her sound is rich with emotion and authenticity. “I would say it’s honest, soulful, singer/songwriter pop music with a lot of organic elements in it. My focus is on telling an important story and really digging deep into every corner of my soul when writing it.”
MAGLY’s latest single, “Honesty,” is a deeply personal song born out of heartbreak and frustration. She described the song as a pop track with “a lot of energy, big organic drums, and honest lyrics.” This song was essential for her to heal and move on from a difficult time in her life, specifically being unexpectedly dropped by three companies she had worked with.
With “Honesty” out in the world, MAGLY is looking forward to the next steps in her career, with her debut album in the works.
How would you define your music?
I would say it’s honest, soulful, singer/songwriter pop music with a lot of organic elements in it. My focus is on telling an important story, and really digging deep into every corner of my soul when writing it.
Can you walk us through your creative process when crafting new music? Where do you draw inspiration from?
When I’m going into a session with (usually) another co-writer and producer, my goal is to be as open and honest as possible in the session. I want it to be a safe and creative space for everyone.
I always like to start the session out with a few hours of just talking and checking in on each other.
After that you can already sense the mood in the room, and then start writing out from that mood. We jam on a guitar or a piano, trying out different melodies, just what comes to mind, and what feels good. Then finding the right words, and this is so much easier when you have talked for a while before. I always write about my own experiences in life. I feel and think a lot all the time so it comes pretty natural to me. (most of the time, haha)
I almost never prepare for a session. Some people have a lot of notes on their phone or computer with endless titles, cool sentences or stories but i never have a word, a sentence or a melody beforehand, cuz i like songwriting being a jam and a feeling more than a construction. Even though pop music is a construction, kinda, haha.
Can you tell us about your new single “Honesty”?
Honesty is my third single but my first time releasing a single as an independent artist, which I’m super excited about.
Its a pop song with a lot of energy, big organic drums and honest lyrics. Just what I wanted my third single to be. I needed to write this song to be able to move on and stand tall in what had happened to me.
What is the meaning behind this song?
Honesty is my own experience and the sudden ending of what I considered a mutual strong and important relationship. All the promises we made turned into misunderstanding and lies, eventually leading to self-loathing. This song is my way to regain strength and belief in myself.
To be specific i got dumped from 3 different companies that i worked with and for, without a reason. It all happened within 5 months and it left me with a lot of self doubt and trust issues.
But I believe that everything happens for a reason and I had to go through this to get to where I wanted to go.
You have shared the accompanying music video for the song. What was it like shooting it?
It was so much fun! When I wrote Honesty I instantly got scenes in my head, and I created a storyboard with the Video director Louie Angenendt. I wanted an old car, a beautiful sunset and for me to be in the water. I wanted the video to be moving constantly, cuz that’s what the song does. It develops all the time.
I wanted to show that there is beauty in frustration.
We shot the video over two days. On the first day we did all the water scenes, and on the second day we rented an old car from an amazing guy called Martin from US garage Fredericia, and we filmed me driving the car all day and until midnight.
It was so much fun to drive that old car, but also a bit difficult. I needed practice for a few hours, haha.
What’s next for MAGLY? Are there any upcoming projects, collaborations, or performances that you’re excited to share with your fans?
I will be releasing a lot of new music in the next coming months, and then I’m working on my debut album, which I’m sooo excited about. I will be playing some gigs in the near future, but more about that later.
What is a message you would like to give through your music, and why?
Being honest and to trust your gut no matter what. Deep down you know the answer and it’s so much easier to follow it than trying to avoid it.

Fun fact about me: I like a piece of white bread, with butter and cream puff (flødebolle in danish) on top.
