BTS turned the center of Mexico City into a sea of purple on May 6 after more than 50,000 fans flooded the Zócalo within hours of the group’s surprise appearance announcement. The massive gathering took place outside Mexico’s National Palace, where the members briefly greeted fans from the historic balcony following a private meeting with President Claudia Sheinbaum.

According to reports circulating across social media and local outlets, the crowd formed in less than five hours after news broke that RM, Jin, SUGA, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook would visit the Presidential Palace ahead of their sold-out Mexico City concerts. Fans packed the square throughout the afternoon, singing BTS songs, waving banners, and chanting the group’s name as anticipation intensified across the capital.

The moment quickly became one of the most talked-about stops of BTS’ ongoing ARIRANG World Tour, their first full-scale global run since completing mandatory military service in South Korea. Following a roughly 40-minute meeting with President Sheinbaum, the group stepped onto the palace balcony to greet the enormous crowd gathered below. Videos from the scene showed emotional fans crying, screaming, and singing in unison as the seven members waved to ARMY from above.

Mexico has long been one of BTS’ strongest international markets, but the scale of the turnout reignited conversations around the group’s unprecedented global reach. Comparisons to Beatlemania and Michael Jackson’s international appearances quickly spread online, with fans and commentators pointing to the speed and size of the gathering as proof of BTS’ continued cultural power nearly 13 years into their career.

The visit also carried political and cultural significance. Earlier in 2026, President Sheinbaum publicly advocated for additional BTS concerts in Mexico, even sending a formal letter to South Korean leadership praising the group’s influence on young people through messages of “friendship, peace, and love.”

BTS are currently in Mexico City for three concerts at GNP Seguros Stadium on May 7, 9, and 10, all of which sold out rapidly after tickets went on sale. The dates mark the first Latin American leg of the ARIRANG World Tour, which launched on April 9 in Goyang and spans more than 85 shows across 34 cities and 23 countries through 2027.
