Tate McRae delivers a pop spectacle with her third studio album, So Close to What. Following the success of her first two albums, I Used to Think I Could Fly and Think Later, the 21-year-old singer further cements her status as a pop sensation. The album seamlessly blends modern pop with nostalgic elements, featuring songs like “Sports Car” and “2 Hands” that transport listeners back to the early 2000s.
Tate began working on this album shortly after the release of Think Later, revealing that she was immensely inspired to write new songs. The result is a project that offers an introspective exploration of themes such as self-discovery, love, and the quest for balance—a balance she seems to have found while creating So Close to What. In fact, she was in the midst of her Think Later World Tour, but this didn’t stop her from tirelessly crafting the record with her longtime collaborator, Ryan Tedder, the frontman of OneRepublic.
The album’s first three singles paved the way for what quickly proved to be a standout project. “It’s OK I’m OK” became her highest-debuting song on the Billboard Hot 100, entering at No. 20. The follow-up, “2 Hands,” peaked at No. 41, while “Sports Car” reached No. 21. In total, So Close to What features 15 tracks, including guest appearances from Flo Milli and The Kid Laroi. However, some of the album’s strongest moments come when Tate shines on her own.
