Danish duo Fake Mannequin are stepping into the spotlight with Composed Reality, their debut album arrived May 22. Built on trip-hop foundations and shaped by sleek contemporary electronic production, the project introduces a cinematic world where themes of identity, control and emotional disintegration unfold across immersive sonic textures.

Following the release of introductory singles “Same Tree” and “Silverspoon,” Amy Horn and Tor Laurens deepen their artistic vision with a record that explores the tension between mechanical precision and human vulnerability. Across the album’s carefully structured tracklist, Fake Mannequin construct what feels less like a traditional debut and more like a fully formed conceptual statement.

Produced by Laurens, Composed Reality leans into minimalist trip-hop influences while incorporating synth-pop flourishes, warm basslines and organic instrumentation. Characteristic synthesizers cut through hand-played elements, creating a soundscape that feels simultaneously clinical and intimate. Horn’s soft yet commanding vocal delivery anchors the project, threading together layered harmonies and emotionally charged melodies that drift between restraint and collapse.

At the center of the album is the duo’s exploration of duality. Even the name Fake Mannequin reflects the push-and-pull between performance and authenticity, artificial construction and emotional truth. Through stark, evocative lyricism, the project examines fractured relationships, shifting identities and the ways individuals attempt to maintain control while confronting internal chaos.

The focus track, “Danger,” encapsulates that tension with striking precision. Drawing inspiration from 1990s trip-hop pioneers such as Massive Attack, the track unfolds through seductive rhythms and shadowy production. Beneath its polished surface lies an unresolved conflict between destructive desire and liberation.

The release also marks another chapter for both artists. Horn previously performed as part of the Copenhagen/Munich electronic duo naun and developed her sound through collaborations spanning Berlin’s experimental scene. Laurens, meanwhile, has built an extensive résumé as a producer and composer through projects including Elegant, UhreWaja and OAKH, while collaborating with artists such as Hanne Boel, Sekuoia, Noah, Panamah and Lueenas.
