This New Music Friday brings a fresh wave of pop releases led by Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan’s long-awaited “expectations” remix and Tate McRae’s provocative new single “Housewife.” Released on October 15, both tracks explore independence, desire and the refusal to settle.
Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan join forces on a reworked version of “expectations,” originally featured on Rodrigo’s third album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love. The collaboration transforms the track into a buoyant, 1980s-inspired synth-pop anthem, pairing groovy synthesizers and handclaps with the dance-punk energy that drives its unapologetic message.
Produced by longtime Rodrigo collaborator Dan Nigro alongside Mike Wise, the remix builds on the original song’s account of a disappointing romantic encounter.
Roan gets her own verse, turning the song’s relationship frustrations toward a woman who ghosted her after a front-row concert date and some physical advances. The song also marks her first official featured appearance on a Rodrigo song, bringing their long-standing friendship and shared musical connections into a formal collaboration.
The accompanying video, directed by Bardia Zeinali, places the pair inside a retro television game show called The Big Expectations Show. David Byrne appears as host Johnny Johnson, while the production embraces vintage styling, exaggerated television formats and playful competition.
Tate McRae takes a different route with “Housewife,” the lead single from her forthcoming fourth album. During an appearance on The Tonight Show, she described the track as being “about a woman who can’t be contained,” a sentiment reflected in lyrics that challenge expectations surrounding fame, money and domestic life. The song pushes back against the pressures of the music industry while imagining a future defined by financial independence and personal freedom.
Directed by Pierre-Ange Carlotti, the accompanying video was filmed in the South of France and features McRae in a red bikini pushing a stroller filled with cash through lavish surroundings. The imagery satirizes traditional domestic expectations, replacing the conventional housewife fantasy with a vision centered on wealth, autonomy and the freedom to make her own decisions.
Noteworthy releases also come from Fontaines D.C., KATSEYE, Mariah Carey, U2, Hearts2Hearts, Kygo x Ava Max,, and more.
