The conversation unfolded on Instagram after a fan who attended Grande’s ongoing Eternal Sunshine Tour mentioned hearing a bass sound reminiscent of the heavy 808s heard on songs like “7 rings.” Responding directly, Grande clarified the production choice while praising longtime collaborator Ilya Salmanzadeh.
“it’s technically a regular sub bass !!! BUT we love it so @ilya_music really …….. did his thing,” she wrote, confirming the sound isn’t built around trap-inspired production. The comment also reassures fans expecting a different sonic direction that petal leans away from electronic or trap percussion despite its deep, warm bass frequencies.
The exchange offers another glimpse into Ariana Grande’s creative process as anticipation for her eighth studio album continues to grow. Executive produced by Grande and Ilya, petal has been presented as one of her most personal projects to date, exploring healing, resilience and personal transformation through floral imagery. Grande’s latest clarification arrives just days after she shared the first teaser for the “petal” music video.
