Ariana Grande is giving fans their clearest glimpse yet into the emotional core of petal. In a new Instagram video shared ahead of the album’s July 31 release, the singer described the project as both deeply personal and creatively liberating, teasing what may become her most uninhibited body of work to date.

It was kind of about breaking up with all kinds of negative attachments, whether it’s my own monsters in my own head, external voices. Things that no longer serve me,” Grande explained in the clip. “It’s a little feral. It’s definitely from a place that I have been maybe, like, too shy or polite to tap into before, and this kind of just feels like f**k it.”

Those comments immediately fueled anticipation surrounding AG8, which officially received its title and release date earlier this month. Arriving July 31 through BabyDoll Music under exclusive license to Republic Records, petal marks Grande’s first full-length studio album since Eternal Sunshine dominated charts in 2024. The 12-track project is executive produced and co-written by Grande alongside longtime collaborator ILYA.

Creative direction around the album has gradually emerged through cryptic teasers and understated visuals. Unlike the highly stylized concepts tied to Sweetener or Thank U, Next, the cover art for petal strips things back entirely, featuring a soft black-and-white portrait of Grande smiling into the camera.

Grande previously described the album as “something that is full of life and growing through the cracks of something cold and hard and challenging,” hinting at themes of healing, rebirth, and emotional release. Her latest comments expand that vision further.

Speculation around the album intensified throughout spring after Grande repeatedly referenced the number eight across social media. On March 18, fans connected studio selfies posted at exactly 8 a.m. PST to recording spaces associated with Max Martin, whose work helped define some of her biggest commercial peaks. By April, black-and-white studio photos and short teaser clips confirmed the rollout was officially underway.

Momentum behind petal arrives while Grande is simultaneously preparing for the Eternal Sunshine Tour, which launches June 6 in Oakland and stretches across 41 dates before concluding September 1 in London.
