Billie Eilish is doubling down on her controversial comments about meat consumption after days of intense online backlash. Following criticism sparked by a recent Elle interview, the singer returned to Instagram Stories with an unfiltered response defending her stance on animal rights, veganism, and environmental ethics.
“Stay f*cking mad at ME i really don’t give a goddamn f*ck,” Eilish wrote in one of several posts shared Thursday. She continued: “Go watch a documentary or two and some footage of what is done to the animals u claim to love and what it does to the planet u pretend to love as well.”
The Grammy and Oscar-winning artist went even further, directly addressing critics who accused her of being judgmental. “If that footage was hard for u to watch i encourage u to pls take a look at urself,” she added. “Like i am so tired of standing up for/having empathy for living beings being controversial. Pls continue to live in a constant state of cognitive dissonance and denial and try to convince urself that ur not living a lie. Mwah.”
The reaction stems from Eilish’s appearance in Elle’s recent “Ask Me Anything” feature, filmed while promoting her upcoming tour documentary. Asked to name “one hill” she would die on, Eilish warned viewers in advance: “Y’all not gonna like me for this one.” She then stated plainly that “eating meat is inherently wrong,” arguing that claiming to love animals while consuming them is contradictory.
“You can eat meat! Go for it,” she said during the interview. “You can love animals. But you can’t do both.”
Clips of the exchange spread rapidly on social media, triggering fierce debate. Supporters praised Eilish for using her platform to speak openly about animal welfare and climate issues, while critics accused her of moral superiority and oversimplifying personal dietary choices.
None of the statements arrive out of character for Eilish. Raised vegetarian before transitioning to veganism, she has spent years publicly advocating against factory farming and animal exploitation.
