In mid-November, Charli XCX made her SNL debut as both host and musical guest. While preparing for the episode, Charli sought advice on hosting duties from Ariana Grande, who had hosted SNL in October. Charli told Variety that Ariana’s advice was simple yet reassuring: “She’d obviously just done it and killed it, so I was getting tips. She was just like, ‘You’re gonna be amazing, just relax, it’s so fun.’”
Charli and Ariana recently collaborated on the remix of “Sympathy Is a Knife” from the deluxe version of Brat. Both artists have now hosted and performed on SNL, with Ariana’s episode becoming one of the most successful in the show’s history, drawing nearly 6 million viewers. Ariana’s episode featured a sketch in which she sang a parody of Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso.” The sequel to that sketch appeared during Charli’s episode, this time with a parody of Chappell Roan’s “Hot To Go!”
