Doja Cat’s highly anticipated fourth studio album, ‘Scarlet,’ is finally dropping tonight. The album, released through Kemosabe and RCA Records, will feature no collaborations, which is a departure from Doja’s previous albums that included several notable collabs, such as ‘You Right’ with The Weeknd and ‘I Don’t Do Drugs’ with Ariana Grande. Four songs from the LP have already been released: ‘Attention,’ ‘Paint The Town Red,’ ‘Demons,’ and ‘Balut.’ ‘Paint The Town Red’ stands out as the most successful single, having topped the Spotify chart (making it the first female solo rap song to do so), the Billboard Hot 100, and the UK Singles Chart.

Album Title

Before settling on the album title, the 27-year-old singer played around with a few names for the LP. Initially, she seemed to announce that the album was titled ‘Hellmouth,’ but later clarified in an Interview Magazine interview that she hadn’t yet decided on a name. In May, she announced another title, ‘First of All,’ and in June, Doja revealed ‘Scarlet’ as the official name.

The Concept Behind ‘Scarlet’

In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Doja Cat explained that the album’s concept revolves around “rebirth.” She aimed to create an album that would reveal a “new side” of herself to her fans. The choice of the album title, ‘Scarlet,’ also signifies rebirth, as the color red is often associated with new beginnings.

Doja Cat’s Alter Ego

To build anticipation for the album, Doja Cat introduced an alter ego named Scarlet. Scarlet represents her darker, more experimental side and made her debut in the music video for the song ‘Attention,’ where Doja was covered in red paint. Scarlet has since made appearances in other music videos, gaining popularity among Doja Cat’s fans. The Grammy-winning singer has described Scarlet as a means to express her more provocative and rebellious side, as well as symbolizing rebirth and transformation. In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, she stated, “Scarlet is basically a symbol for the reimagination of the self. Just a new beginning.” In recent weeks, wax figures resembling Scarlet have been spotted across America.

Album Artwork

The album artwork was not without controversy. The initial album cover featured a large arachnid and a drop of blood, which fans quickly recognized as identical to the cover of ‘Of Gloom,’ the third studio album by the German band Chaver. Doja Cat subsequently deleted the post from her Instagram the following day, while Chaver’s post remained online, continuing to promote their album with the same cover. She revealed an “updated” cover the day after, featuring two pearlescent arachnids.

The Scarlet Tour

On June 23, Doja Cat announced The Scarlet Tour in support of the album. This marks her first headlining arena tour, taking place in North America and featuring rappers Doechii and Ice Spice as supporting acts.
