It’s MTV Video Music Awards Day! From Nicki Minaj to Shakira, here’s everything you need to know about the show and awards.
The 40th MTV Video Music Awards will take place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, for the second consecutive year. This edition also features Nicki Minaj as the host for the second time. Taylor Swift leads the nominations with 11, including Video of the Year, Song of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Album of the Year. SZA follows closely with 8 nominations, while K-Pop sensation BLACKPINK is the most nominated group with 6 nods. MTV has introduced a new category this year, “Show of the Summer,” and nominees include Beyoncé, BLACKPINK, Drake, Ed Sheeran, Karol G, and Taylor Swift.
Two special awards will be presented during the night. Shakira will be honored with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, making her the first Latin artist to receive this prestigious prize. Diddy will be recognized with the Global Icon Award for his incredible career. Both artists are also scheduled to perform a medley of their biggest hits. Beyoncé has the opportunity to extend her record as the artist with the most VMAs wins. Queen B is nominated in 4 categories, and if she wins all of them, she will have a total of 29 moonpersons!
In a historic first for the VMAs, only women are nominated for Artist of the Year: Beyoncé, Doja Cat, Karol G, Nicki Minaj, Shakira, and Taylor Swift.
Pre-Show:
Saweetie, who won the VMA for Best Art Direction in 2021, will host the pre-show, with support from Dometi Pongo, Kevan Kennedy, and Nessa. During this first part of the night, rapper NLE Choppa and Sabrina Carpenter will make their performing debut at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Main Show:
Several artists will perform during the main show. Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion will perform their new single, “Bongos,” for the first time live. Demi Lovato is returning to the VMAs stage for the first time since 2017. Olivia Rodrigo, who is nominated for six awards, will also be performing. Anitta and K-Pop sensation Tomorrow X Together will perform their unreleased collaboration, “Back for More.” On September 11th, MTV announced a medley to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop. This special joint performance will feature Hip-Hop icons, including the host Nicki Minaj, joining DMC, Doug E. Fresh, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Lil Wayne, and LL Cool J for this memorable moment.
Bebe Rexha, Rita Ora, and Ice Spice are among the presenters.
