Fans have spoken, and Melanie Martinez is this week’s clear winner. Her surprise single “Possession” has been crowned Best New Release of the Week, capturing an overwhelming 92 percent of the fan vote and decisively outpacing new projects from Don Toliver, Noah Kahan, and Ella Langley.
Released with little warning in late January, “Possession” marks the opening chapter of Martinez’s upcoming fourth studio album, HADES, due March 27. The track immediately stood out for its sharp contrast between glossy, almost playful melodies and unsettling lyrical undercurrents. Martinez uses sweetness as a weapon, examining how control and obsession can disguise themselves as affection.
The response was swift. Fans flooded social platforms praising Martinez’s long awaited comeback. That enthusiasm translated directly into the our weekly poll, where “Possession” dominated with ease. Don Toliver’s Octane, his fifth studio album, followed far behind with just 3 percent.
Noah Kahan’s “The Great Divide,” the title track from his forthcoming album, also landed at 3 percent. Ella Langley’s “Dandelion” rounded out the poll at 2 percent. The reflective country-soul track introduces a more grounded, personal era ahead of her sophomore album of the same name. Its subtlety and warmth earned praise, though it faced stiff competition in a crowded release week.
