Laufey returned to late-night television on December 10 with a spellbinding performance of “Lover Girl” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, delivering a lush, jazz-infused moment that showcased her signature blend of romantic storytelling and vintage pop elegance. Airing at 11:35 p.m. ET on NBC, the set marked her second appearance on Fallon—following a widely praised rendition of “Goddess” in May 2024—and arrived during one of the busiest seasons of her career.
Under warm stage lights and accompanied by a small ensemble, Laufey leaned into the song’s cozy, cinematic mood. “Lover Girl” is the third single from her Grammy-nominated album A Matter of Time. The appearance further amplified a surging moment for the Icelandic-Chinese artist, whose holiday-themed tracks “Winter Wonderland” and “From the Start” continue to trend across Spotify’s seasonal charts.
The late-night spotlight also highlighted Laufey’s growing presence in the holiday music landscape. Just weeks earlier, she released a bossa-nova reinterpretation of “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town,” paired with a charming stop-motion video. The track joins her annual playlist mainstays from A Very Laufey Holiday, a festive collection she has been expanding since 2021 and which returns each winter as a fan favorite.
“Lover Girl” itself carries a story shaped by Laufey’s global creative process. Written in a Tokyo hotel during a late-night break on her Bewitched tour, the track reflects her desire to play the bold, mischievous role in romance—an unexpectedly fizzy shift for an artist known for luminous ballads. Recorded in Los Angeles with longtime collaborator Spencer Stewart, the song adds a playful spark to A Matter of Time, her third studio album released on August 22 through Vingolf Recordings/AWAL. Co-produced with Stewart and Aaron Dessner, the album debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and No. 3 in the UK, marking her highest chart entries to date and earning widespread critical acclaim.
Her Fallon performance arrives in the middle of her ambitious A Matter of Time world tour. Launched on September 15, 2025, in Orlando, the tour has already sold out major venues, including two nights at Madison Square Garden and Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena, with Suki Waterhouse opening select shows. Spanning 43 dates across North America, Europe, and Asia, the tour will conclude on March 22, 2026, in Barcelona.
