Lil Nas X is preparing to return with new music, announcing his upcoming single “World’s Greatest” for release on October 1. The song marks a highly personal moment for the rapper, who connected its message directly to a phrase repeatedly shared by his late mother.
The announcement came with a reflective message on social media, where Lil Nas X wrote, “Walk by faith, not by sight” was his mom’s favorite phrase to say. “As I move through life it resonates with me more & more,” he continued. “This one’s for the ‘World’s Greatest!’”

“World’s Greatest” is scheduled to arrive Thursday, October 1, at 12 p.m. EST, giving fans their first new Lil Nas X release following a period away from music. Rather than announcing the track with a conventional teaser, the rapper immediately framed the song through a personal memory, making his mother’s words part of the story surrounding its release.
The timing gives the single added emotional weight. Lil Nas X announced his mother’s passing in August, sharing a photograph of the two together alongside the message, “RIP TO THE BADDEST EVER! LOVE U FOREVER MOMMY. this one’s gonna hurt.” His latest post now places her favorite saying at the center of his return.
The new song will also mark Lil Nas X’s first major new music announcement since he began teasing his eventual return to recording earlier this year. His most recent studio album, 2021’s Montero, debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and produced two Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits: “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” and “Industry Baby,” featuring Jack Harlow.
That album established a run of massive pop-culture moments for Lil Nas X, following the record-breaking success of “Old Town Road” and its Billy Ray Cyrus-assisted remix. The rapper has since continued to experiment with different sounds and visual identities, although a full-length follow-up to Montero has yet to arrive.
