Lil Nas X is mourning the loss of his mother. The rapper shared the news on Instagram alongside a photo of himself with his mother, writing, “RIP TO THE BADDEST EVER! LOVE U FOREVER MOMMY. this one’s gonna hurt.”
The emotional post marks a deeply personal moment for the artist, who has spent the past year publicly addressing his mental health and recovery. No further details about his mother’s passing were provided in the post.
Lil Nas X’s announcement comes after he opened up about his mental health journey in June, revealing that he had spent several months in rehabilitation while working toward recovery. In a two-minute video shared June 17, he thanked fans for supporting him and confirmed that he was receiving professional treatment.
“There is new music on the way,” he told fans at the time, while making clear that he was not ready to return fully to music just yet. The rapper also revealed that he now works with both a therapist and a psychologist.
During the candid conversation, Lil Nas X publicly confirmed that he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, explaining that he initially struggled with the idea of discussing the diagnosis because he feared it would change how people viewed him.
His disclosure followed a difficult period that included several health and legal developments. In April 2025, Lil Nas X revealed that he had been hospitalized with partial facial paralysis and later documented his recovery. Four months later, he was arrested in Los Angeles following a mental health episode that resulted in another hospitalization.
The legal case subsequently shifted toward treatment and rehabilitation. In April 2026, a judge approved a two-year mental health diversion program, giving Lil Nas X the opportunity to focus on treatment rather than proceeding through traditional criminal proceedings. Successful completion of the program through 2028 would result in the charges being dismissed.
Against that backdrop, his June message represented a hopeful step forward. Lil Nas X spoke about eventually returning to music and continuing his journey with fans, while acknowledging that recovery remained his immediate priority.
The rapper’s most recent major musical era dates back to his 2022 studio album Montero, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and included the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits “Industry Baby” with Jack Harlow and “Montero (Call Me by Your Name).”
