The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards turned into a night of records, career milestones and category firsts, with Taylor Swift, Madonna, LISA, BTS and Nirvana each adding new chapters to VMA history. Held Sunday, September 27, at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater and hosted by Snoop Dogg, the ceremony produced several milestones that will shape the record book for years to come.

Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift left the 2026 VMAs with the most significant collection of new records. She won Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia,” Best Direction for “Opalite” and the inaugural Artist Director Honors, giving her three awards from the ceremony.
Her sixth Video of the Year victory extended an already unmatched record. Taylor Swift previously won the category for “Bad Blood” in 2015, “You Need to Calm Down” in 2019, “All Too Well (10 Minute Version)” in 2022, “Anti-Hero” in 2023 and “Fortnight” in 2024.
Taylor Swift also extended her record for Best Direction wins, taking the category for “Opalite.” The award marked her fifth victory in the category and reinforced the increasingly central role directing has played in her visual work.
The new Artist Director Honors created another first. Swift became the inaugural recipient of the award, which recognizes artists whose work behind the camera has expanded their approach to music videos and visual storytelling. She followed the honor by premiering “Patient Zero,” starring Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell.
Her overall VMA total also moved into new territory. Swift moved beyond the previous 30-win benchmark shared with Beyoncé before the ceremony. She is now the artist with the most wins in MTV Video Music Awards history (33).
Madonna
Madonna dominated the 2026 VMAs by collecting seven Moon Persons, the most of any artist during the ceremony. Her wins included Artist of the Year, Best Dance, Best Collaboration for “Bring Your Love” with Sabrina Carpenter, Best Album for Confessions II, Best Long Form Video, Best Cinematography and Best Choreography.
The seven-award haul ended a 27-year competitive VMA drought for Madonna, whose previous competitive win came in 1999.
Madonna also broke another VMA record by opening the show for a fifth time, moving ahead of Rihanna’s previous mark of four. Her latest opening performance came 23 years after her last VMA appearance and featured Carpenter for “Bring Your Love” before transitioning into “Danceteria Afterhours” with Charli XCX.
Her 13 nominations also tied Lady Gaga’s single-year nomination record, originally established in 2010. Madonna finished the night with 26 competitive VMA wins, placing her behind Swift and Beyoncé in that count.
Nirvana
Nirvana added another notable milestone when the band received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear accepted the honor during the ceremony.
The recognition marked the first time in 23 years that a group or duo received the Video Vanguard Award. Duran Duran was the previous group recipient in 2003, making Nirvana’s honor particularly significant in the award’s history.
BTS
BTS matched a different kind of milestone by sweeping all three of their 2026 nominations. The group won Song of the Year, Best K-Pop and Best Group, with all three victories tied to “Swim.”
The sweep also continued a recent run for K-pop at the ceremony. For the second consecutive year, Song of the Year went to a K-pop act.
LISA
LISA created one of the night’s clearest category firsts by winning Best Pop for “Dream.” The victory made her a four-time VMA winner and marked the first Best Pop win by an Asian solo act in 42 years.
Her victory also created a new combination in VMA history. LISA became the first soloist and female act to win both Best K-Pop and Best Pop, a feat previously achieved only by BTS.
The Best K-Pop category had already become a familiar part of LISA’s VMA résumé. She previously won for “Lalisa” in 2022, “Rockstar” in 2024 and “Born Again” in 2025, meaning her 2026 victory extended a three-year consecutive winning streak into a fourth year.
LISA’s emotional acceptance speech added another personal moment to the record. “To my Lilies, I wouldn’t be here without you guys, thank you so much for your love and support,” she told the crowd after receiving her fourth Moon Person.
