Lorde has opened up about a key source of inspiration behind her upcoming album Virgin, revealing that Charli XCX’s acclaimed album BRAT—and specifically their “Girl, so confusing” remix—played a powerful role in shaping her creative process. Lorde officially announced Virgin on April 30, confirming the album will be released on June 27, 2025. It marks her first album since Solar Power (2021) and signals a return to a more synth-driven, emotionally intense sound. The project’s lead single, “What Was That,” was released last week and has already reached the top 5 on Spotify’s global chart.

In a recent statement, the New Zealand-born artist explained how Charli’s bold and sharply defined work gave her a creative push: “‘BRAT’ coming out really gave me a kick in a lot of ways,” Lorde said. “It forced me to further define what I was doing because Charli had so masterfully defined everything about BRAT.” Recently, the duo performed their collaboration at Coachella, where Charli took over with her BRATCHELLA.
Virgin features 11 tracks, all written by Lorde and co-produced with Jim-E Stack, Fabiana Palladino, Andrew Aged, Buddy Ross, Dan Nigro, and Devonté Hynes. Mixing duties were handled by Spike Stent and Tom Elmhirst, with Chris Gehringer mastering the final product. In her announcement, Lorde described the record as “100% written in blood,” hinting at a deeply personal and possibly transformative body of work.
