Madonna has shed new light on the collapse of her long-discussed biopic, revealing that budget concerns and creative disagreements ultimately derailed the project after years of development. Speaking in a new interview with Interview Magazine, the pop icon reflected on her difficult experience working with Universal Pictures and explained why the film never moved forward.
“I worked on my script for two years and spent two years at Universal Studios,” Madonna said. “I needed—I’ve had an extraordinary life. I’ve had a huge life, so I needed a big budget.”
The comments offer one of Madonna’s clearest explanations yet regarding the fate of the biographical film, which was first announced in 2020. At the time, Universal Pictures positioned the project as a major studio production, with Madonna attached as both director and co-writer. The screenplay initially involved Oscar-winning writer Diablo Cody before later being reworked with screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson.
From the beginning, Madonna envisioned an ambitious portrait of her life and career, tracing her journey from Michigan to global superstardom. Reports throughout development suggested the singer wanted extensive musical sequences, large-scale recreations of iconic performances, and international filming locations that would require a substantial budget.
One of the most talked-about aspects of the production was its casting process. In 2022, after months of highly competitive auditions that reportedly included intensive choreography and vocal training sessions overseen by Madonna herself, Julia Garner landed the lead role.
Momentum slowed considerably in early 2023 when the project was put on hold. At the time, Madonna shifted her focus to the massively successful Celebration Tour, which became one of the highest-grossing tours of her career.
