Mariah Carey is officially stepping into a new musical era, but the legendary vocalist still has her finger firmly on the pulse of today’s pop landscape. In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Mariah shared that she’s been enjoying the music of Sabrina Carpenter, Tate McRae, and Olivia Rodrigo — a trio of former rising stars who have quickly become the main pop characters of the 2020s.

The Harper’s Bazaar feature arrives as excitement builds around Mariah’s highly anticipated new album, Here For It All, due out September 26. The LP marks her return to the spotlight after a seven-year gap since 2018’s Caution. The upcoming album will include 11 new songs, led by the single “Type Dangerous,” which debuted in June and signaled the start of her MC16 era, followed by “Sugar Sweet” featuring Kehlani and Shenseea.
In the interview, Mariah also reflected on how much the music industry has changed since she got her start in the early ’90s. “Now, people can buy a microphone and light themselves and film themselves,” she said. “Anyone can be their own celebrity by just going viral.” Comparing today’s digital world to her own early years, she added, “Back then, if you wanted people to hear your music, you had to get a record deal.”
